Now that it’s October, our chiropractors near Wayne, NJ want to raise awareness about Spina Bifida. This is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States, and the defect translates into the phrase “split spine.” Spina Bifida occurs when a baby is in a womb and the spinal column is not able to completely close. About eight babies born in the U.S. per day have Spina Bifida or a similar birth defect. While there is no known cause, it is believed that both genetic and environmental factors play a role in developing the condition.
There are four different types of Spina Bifida. Occult Spinal Dysraphism (OSD) occurs when a child is born with a dimple in their lower back. Doctors need to perform special tests to make sure that this isn’t present at birth. Spina Bifida Occulta is another type of the condition, however, it usually doesn’t cause harm and there aren’t visible signs. Meningocele is another form of Spina Bifida, and it causes part of the spinal cord to come through the spine like a sac that is pushed out. Finally, myelomeningocele, also called Spina Bifida Cystica, is the most severe form of the disorder and it occurs when parts of the spinal cord and nerves emerge through the open part of the spine.
Surgery is the most common treatment for Spina Bifida, however, some forms do not need to be treated. If you are pregnant, make sure that you take folic acid before and during the first three months of pregnancy to reduce the chance of it developing.
