What to Expect

Your physical therapy doctor will discuss treatment options with patients referred for physical therapy. Patients can expect to perform exercise to improve strength, endurance and mobility. A physical therapist can discuss the purpose of each treatment and what to expect as a result of the specific treatment used. A physical therapy doctor may expect a patient to perform exercises at home, as well as those done at the physical therapy center.

Physical Therapy Evaluations

A physical therapist will use your medical history and perform a physical therapy evaluation during the initial assessment. Measurements may be taken during the assessment and periodically throughout physical therapy treatment.

Discuss any specific goals you may have for the treatment plan. Your physical therapist partners with you to develop an individualized treatment plan to help achieve concrete goals and objectives on the road to your optimal recovery.

Treatment sessions may incorporate a variety of different techniques. In addition to active and passive exercises, electrical stimulation, heat or ice application may be used to reduce discomfort and aid healing. Patients may need to perform exercises at home.

Techniques and Therapies
